Everyday durable goods and consumer credit

Paying for appliances, electronics, and other durable goods: consumer checklist for cash, cards, and installment offers.

Appliances, electronics, tools, and other durables often come with “12 months special financing” tags. Those offers can be reasonable or expensive, depending on whether you clear the balance before interest starts and whether you needed the item now. How it works for consumers

  1. Separate replace now (failed refrigerator) from upgrade optional.
  2. Price-match the cash total across retailers when practical.
  3. Treat extended warranties and protection plans as separate yes/no decisions (Service contracts and extended warranties; appliance skip-vs-buy math: Appliance extended warranties).
  4. If using promotional financing, calendar the end date and payment target, and know return and warranty rules while financed.
  5. Recycle or haul-away fees belong in the cash price comparison.

Checklist

  • Energy use / operating cost considered for appliances
  • Promo APR end date on your calendar
  • No stacking multiple store cards in one week without a plan
  • Delivery and install quoted in writing
  • Budget category ready for the payment

When “special financing” beats cash (and when it doesn’t)

Promotional financing can beat revolving card interest if you would have carried a balance anyway and you can hit the promo payoff date. It rarely beats cash if paying cash means skipping a high-interest promo fee and you already have the money set aside. Store-card vs bank-card math is in Store credit cards vs bank cards; co-branded brand cards: Co-branded credit cards. Run both totals:

  1. Cash today (including delivery)
  2. Financed total if you miss the promo rules
  3. Financed total if you succeed

Floor models and open-box durables can be good cash deals; financing an open-box item with limited return rights deserves a second look. Confirm serial numbers and cosmetic condition in writing before the first payment posts.
