A multi-policy (bundle) discount lowers the combined bill when one insurer writes both auto and home (or renters). The discount is real, often roughly 5–25% on one or both lines depending on the carrier, but a cheap bundle can still lose to two specialists priced separately. This guide is when bundling helps vs when you should shop apart.
Homeowners deductible choices still matter on their own: Compare homeowners insurance deductibles. Renters use the same logic at lower premiums: Renters insurance basics.
Run three quotes, not one
| Quote set | What you request |
|---|---|
| A | Auto + home (or renters) bundled at Carrier 1 |
| B | Auto at Carrier 2 + home at Carrier 3 (best separate specialists) |
| C | Bundled at Carrier 4 (second bundle option) |
Keep coverage matched: same auto liability/UM/deductibles (Comparison-shop auto insurance); same dwelling Coverage A, deductibles, and liability on the home side. Then compare total annual premium, not the size of the printed “bundle savings” badge.
When bundling usually wins
- Both lines are already competitive at the same carrier before the discount.
- You want one claims number and one login (convenience has value if prices are within ~5%).
- An umbrella is easier when auto and home sit with the same insurer (Umbrella and liability basics).
- You rent and the renters add-on is $150–$300/year with a true multi-policy credit on a $1,400 auto policy.
When separate policies usually win
- The bundled home quote uses a high wind/hurricane deductible you did not want.
- Auto is cheap in the bundle but home Coverage A is 10%+ under a rebuild estimate.
- A direct auto writer beats the bundle auto line by more than the home discount is worth.
- You are only bundling to “get the discount” on a renters policy you would otherwise skip (landlords may still require renters).
Worked example
Morgan’s separate best quotes: auto $1,320/year, home $1,880/year, total $3,200. Bundle at Carrier B: auto $1,210, home $1,820, total $3,030 (saves $170). Bundle at Carrier C: auto $1,050, home $2,400, total $3,450 (loses $250 vs separate) because the home rate is weak despite a flashy auto discount. Morgan takes Carrier B’s bundle, not Carrier C’s badge.
Premium vs deductible math: Premiums vs deductibles. Auto-only cutting levers: Lower your car insurance premium.
Checklist
- Inventory required coverages (lender dwelling minimums, auto lienholder rules).
- Collect one bundle quote and one split-specialist pair on the same limits.
- Compare total annual premium, deductibles, and exclusions side by side.
- Reject bundles that underinsure the dwelling or gut auto liability.
- Re-shop at renewal; last year’s winner is not permanent.
