Closing a checking account is easy in the app and expensive when a rent ACH or car loan draft still points at the old routing number. This guide is a solo-account close checklist: inventory drafts, overlap, then close. It is not the joint-owner exit (use How to close a joint bank account) and not the cleanup after a bank already closed you negative (use Closed bank account with a negative balance).
For a full bank move, pair this with Switching banks without missed payments.
Why autopays bounce after a close
Most billers store your routing and account numbers. Closing the account does not notify Netflix, the landlord portal, or the credit-union loan desk. The next ACH returns as R02/account closed or NSF-style, and you can owe late fees on top of the original bill.
Close sequence (solo account)
- Open and fund the destination account first (new checking or an existing solo account you will keep).
- Export 90 days of transactions. Highlight every recurring ACH, debit autopay, and Zelle/P2P pull.
- Move payroll (or confirm the new job already deposits to the keeper account). Wait for one live paycheck.
- Repoint every autopay in each biller portal. Prefer portal edits over hoping a “switch kit” catches everything.
- Keep a buffer in the old account (≥ one rent payment or the largest remaining draft) for 30 days of quiet activity.
- Stop using the old debit card. Destroy it after close confirmation.
- Request closure in branch, secure chat, or phone. Ask for a confirmation number and final statement PDF.
- Watch both accounts for 60 days for residual returns or “account still open” letters.

Worked example
Alex is leaving a $15/month fee checking account at a branch bank for a $0 online checking (When should I switch banks to avoid monthly fees).
| Item | Old account | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Rent ACH | $1,550 on the 1st | Landlord portal → new Ally routing/account |
| Auto loan | $287 on the 12th | CU loan portal updated; confirm next draft |
| Phone + streaming | $95 mid-month | Card autopay moved to new debit |
| Payroll (ADP) | $2,150 biweekly | New deposit live on Oct 3 |
| Buffer left behind | $1,600 | Held through Nov 5, then transferred out |
| Close | Nov 6 | Secure chat confirmation #A17492 |
No bounced rent; final fee month is the last cost on the old schedule (Checking account fees).
Red flags
- Closing the day after you change rent ACH (one draft may still be in flight).
- Leaving $0 behind while a subscription retry is pending.
- Ignoring a joint co-owner (wrong guide; use the joint close path).
- Walking away from a negative balance and hoping ChexSystems ignores it (Negative-balance closed account).
Checklist
- Inventory 90 days of drafts and card autopays.
- Land payroll on the keeper account and verify one paycheck.
- Repoint bills; keep old account funded for one full cycle.
- Download statements and tax documents before close.
- Close only after 30 quiet days; save the confirmation.
- Monitor for 60 days; update any missed biller immediately.
