A freeze at one bureau leaves the other two open. Fraudsters and aggressive lenders can still find a file at Experian or TransUnion if only Equifax is frozen. Completing the set means three separate freezes: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
This guide is the all-three checklist (order, confirmations, PIN/password storage). For thaw-before-apply mechanics and what freezes do not stop, use Freezing and unfreezing your credit. Freeze vs fraud alert: Credit freezes and fraud alerts.
Why all three matter
| If you freeze only… | Still open |
|---|---|
| Equifax | Experian + TransUnion |
| Experian | Equifax + TransUnion |
| TransUnion | Equifax + Experian |
Many card and loan applications try more than one bureau. A single-bureau freeze is incomplete protection for new-account fraud.
Federal rules make placing, lifting, and removing a freeze free. You should not pay a monitoring upsell to complete the freeze itself.
Step-by-step: place three freezes
Do these as three short sessions (or one sitting). Online is usually fastest; phone and mail remain options if a portal fails.
- Gather ID facts you will type the same way each time: full legal name, current address, prior address if asked, SSN, DOB, and a mobile number/email you control.
- Equifax: Use Equifax’s official security-freeze page (start from equifax.com or the CFPB freeze directory). Create or sign in to the freeze account. Place the freeze. Save the confirmation number and any PIN/password.
- Experian: Repeat on Experian’s official freeze page. Save confirmation + credentials in the same password manager vault.
- TransUnion: Repeat on TransUnion’s official freeze page. Save confirmation + credentials.
- Verify: Sign back in (or check email confirmations) until each bureau shows frozen / active security freeze.
- Store offline backup: Print or export the three confirmation IDs and PINs to an encrypted note or paper in a safe place (Freeze PIN loss).
Suggested order if you are tired: Equifax → Experian → TransUnion (alphabetical), so you never wonder which one you skipped.
What to save in one vault note
| Bureau | Confirmation / ref # | PIN or password hint | Date frozen | Date you last verified |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Equifax | ||||
| Experian | ||||
| TransUnion |
Do not text PINs to yourself in plain SMS. Do not reuse your email password as the freeze PIN if the bureau lets you choose.
After the three freezes are on
Still works in most cases: you pulling your own reports, many soft checks, existing creditors managing your open accounts.
Blocked until you thaw: most new credit hard pulls that need a full file (Hard vs soft credit checks).
Before a real application (mortgage, auto, card):
- Ask which bureau(s) the lender will pull.
- Thaw only those bureaus for a date range or one-time lift.
- Re-freeze the same day the pull completes when you can.
Calm thaw checklist lives in Freeze and unfreeze. Travel timing: Freeze after travel. Minors: Freeze credit for a minor.
Worked example
Jordan freezes Equifax on Monday night, then gets distracted. Tuesday a retailer hard-pulls Experian for a store card Jordan did not open. Wednesday Jordan freezes Experian and TransUnion and disputes the fraudulent inquiry/account path with the open bureaus’ fraud process.
Lesson: treat “all three done” as the finish line, not “I started at one portal.”
Checklist
- Complete Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion freezes (not just one).
- Save three confirmations + PINs in a password manager and one offline backup.
- Re-login once within a week to confirm each status still shows frozen.
- Skip paid freeze upsells; the freeze itself is free.
- Plan thaws only when you have a real application date.
Educational only. Portal URLs and identity-proofing steps change. Use official bureau or CFPB-linked freeze pages.
