How to set aside money for self-employment tax

Action plan to park a percent of side-hustle profit for SE tax and income tax: account, automation, quarterly calendar, and a worked reserve.

Reviewed September 2026.

Knowing that self-employment tax exists is not the same as having the cash on April 15. This guide is the action plan: pick a reserve percent, automate transfers, and calendar estimates. Mechanics of SE tax itself: Self-employment tax basics. Percentage ranges for freelancers: How much should I save for taxes as a freelancer.

Step 1: Pick a starting reserve percent

Until you run IRS worksheets or tax software, many people park 25-30% of profit for federal tax (income tax + SE tax combined), then add state if you owe state income tax (State tax basics).

SituationStarting federal habit (educational)
Side hustle under ~$10k profit, solid W-2 withholdingOften 20-25% of profit; verify with a projection
Main freelance income, mid bracketsOften 25-30% of profit
High bracket + state income tax30-40%+ combined until modeled

Your real number depends on deductions, credits, retirement contributions, and W-2 withholding. Replace the habit percent after one accurate estimate.

Step 2: Open the tax bucket and automate

  1. Nickname a savings account SE-TAX (HYSA is fine).
  2. Route hustle payouts to a dedicated checking first (Start a side hustle without mixing personal money).
  3. Same day a payout clears, transfer reserve % × approximate profit (gross minus obvious fees/expenses you already logged).
  4. Never swipe SE-TAX for lifestyle.

Step 3: Calendar the send, not only the save

Saving without remitting can still leave underpayment penalties. Use How to estimate quarterly estimated taxes and the due-date pattern in Side hustle quarterly taxes. Prior-year safe harbor: Estimated tax safe harbor rules.

Pay with IRS Direct Pay or EFTPS; save confirmation numbers next to the bank transfer.

Worked example: $1,600 profit week

Cameron’s week:

ItemAmount
Net profit after fees/supplies$1,600
Reserve at 30%$480 → SE-TAX
Side salary to household$900
Buffer left in hustle checking$220

After 13 similar weeks, SE-TAX holds about $6,240 before quarterly sends. Cameron remits estimates from that balance and tops up if a big December invoice lands.

Checklist

  1. Write your starting % on a note in the bank nickname or password manager.
  2. Automate or same-day manual transfer on every payout.
  3. Put four federal estimate dates on your calendar (confirm IRS.gov each year).
  4. Re-forecast after a 30% income change.
  5. Adjust W-2 withholding with a new Form W-4 if that is cleaner than estimates.
  6. Keep the year-end filing path clear with Filing taxes for beginners and the form map in W-2 vs 1099 tax basics.
