Fake Craigslist Venmo and untagged P2P payment scams

Craigslist sellers and buyers pressured into untagged Venmo sends or irreversible P2P: scripts, red flags, and safer local-payment habits.

Craigslist still hosts real local deals, and a steady stream of chats that end with Venmo, PayPal Friends & Family, Cash App, or Zelle to a stranger. Wire and MoneyGram variants are covered in Fake Craigslist wire scams. Venmo purchase-tag / irreversible-send pressure on any platform: Fake Venmo Friends & Family scams. This guide focuses on Craigslist-specific Venmo / irreversible P2P scripts aimed at sellers and buyers.

Broader map: Credit and debt scams. Gift-card extracts that show up in the same threads: Gift cards and prepaid debit risks.

Common Craigslist Venmo scripts

ScriptWho is targetedHow the money leaves
Buyer insists you skip Venmo’s purchase tag (“Friends & Family / no fee”) then disputes or vanishesSellerUntagged personal sends usually lack purchase protection; fake “protected” screenshots
Buyer “overpays” on Venmo and asks you to Venmo the difference to a shipperSellerFake or reversible credit, then irreversible send of the “extra”
Seller demands Venmo / Cash App / Zelle before meetup or before the item leaves their carBuyerItem never appears; untagged Venmo and many P2P sends are hard to claw back
“Craigslist support” or escrow bot asks you to Venmo a release feeEither sidePhishing for login codes or advance fees
Distant “buyer” who will only pay Venmo to your personal handle, never in personSellerAccount takeover or stolen funding source; you ship, then the charge reverses

On Venmo, purchase protection (when it applies) generally depends on tagging the payment as a purchase for goods/services before you send; an ordinary personal send to a stranger usually behaves like cash. Scammers still say “Friends & Family” or “don’t tag it so I avoid a fee.” Craigslist strangers are not trusted contacts. Treat pressure to skip the purchase tag, or to move the chat off Craigslist email into a Venmo-only thread, as a hard stop.

Why untagged Venmo / “no fee” sends are the trap

Untagged Venmo personal sends and many instant P2P rails are built for trusted contacts. Once the recipient claims the funds, banks and Venmo (a PayPal service), Cash App (Block), and Zelle networks often treat the send as authorized: even if the Craigslist “buyer” used a stolen card upstream and the funding later reverses onto you.

Irreversible P2P habits that reduce damage across apps: Zelle and P2P payment scams.

Worked example: the $280 lawn mower

Alex lists a push mower for $180 on Craigslist. “Jordan” texts from a Google Voice number: will Venmo $280 “by mistake” from a company card and wants Alex to Venmo $100 to the moving helper for pickup. A screenshot shows a pending Venmo Goods payment.

Alex refuses any overpayment and insists on cash at a police-station parking lot. Jordan vanishes. If Alex had forwarded $100 as an untagged Venmo personal send after a fake or reversing credit, the bank clawback would have left Alex short while the Venmo send stayed gone.

Safer Craigslist payment rules

  1. Prefer in-person cash for local Craigslist deals, or a platform checkout that holds funds when you use a different marketplace.
  2. If you must use Venmo for a local meetup, meet first, inspect the item, then send Goods and Services: and still treat strangers as high risk.
  3. Never accept overpayment. Never Venmo “shipping,” “escrow,” or “customs” for a Craigslist ad.
  4. Do not “verify” a payment by sending money back. Verify inside the official Venmo or bank app only.
  5. Sellers: ignore buyers who will not state a local pickup window without payment first.
  6. Buyers: ignore sellers who refuse to show the item in person or on a live video call before any send.

If a “buyer” or “support agent” asks you to install remote-viewing software or share a one-time code, treat it as phishing / account takeover and stop.

If you already Venmo’d or refunded a stranger

  1. Open the Venmo / PayPal Help fraud path immediately; freeze related bank cards if a funding source looks compromised.
  2. Call your bank or credit union’s fraud line; ask what recall options exist (often limited once claimed).
  3. File ReportFraud.ftc.gov and a local police report if you need a case number.
  4. Do not pay a second “recovery” firm to retrieve the first loss.
  5. If you shared ID images or account numbers, monitor accounts and consider freezes at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Checklist

  1. Local Craigslist deal → prefer cash at a public meetup.
  2. Refuse untagged Venmo / “skip the purchase tag” sends with strangers; refuse overpayments.
  3. Ignore off-platform “escrow” or support bots that demand Venmo fees.
  4. No gift cards, crypto ATMs, or irreversible P2P for people you only met in a Craigslist email.
  5. Document chat and ads; report clear scams even when you walked away.
  6. Teach household members the same Venmo rule for Craigslist, Marketplace, and OfferUp.
