Form 1099-NEC reports nonemployee compensation: money a business paid you as a contractor (not as a W-2 employee). Payers generally issue it when payments hit the IRS threshold for the tax year (confirm the current dollar trigger on IRS.gov; many recent years used $600, and the general threshold for payments after December 31, 2025 is $2,000 (verify the tax year you are in)). What the form is telling you
| Item | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Payer | Client or platform that paid you |
| Recipient | You (SSN or EIN) |
| Box 1 (typical) | Nonemployee compensation total for the year |
| Copies | IRS gets a copy; you use yours to file |
A 1099-NEC is an information return. Taxable profit is still yours to compute after expenses on Schedule C in most sole-prop cases (What is a Schedule C and when you need one). No form does not mean no tax if you were paid.
Seven actions when a 1099-NEC arrives
- Check your name, address, TIN, and Box 4. Wrong SSN/EIN needs a corrected form from the payer. NEC pay usually has no federal withholding; if Box 4 shows federal tax withheld (backup withholding), claim that credit when you file.
- Match Box 1 to your hustle books (Side hustle money basics). Include payments that cleared, not invoices still unpaid.
- List income the payer omitted. If they paid you $2,400 and reported $1,900, you still report the full business income; ask for a corrected 1099 if their copy is wrong.
- Separate true reimbursements. If a client repaid a specific expense, keep the receipt and their accounting note. Confirm with your preparer whether that amount belongs in income, offsets an expense, or both. Do not exclude money from income just because someone labeled it a reimbursement.
- Plan Schedule C + Schedule SE. Net profit usually faces income tax and self-employment tax (Self-employment tax basics).
- Check estimates for the right year. A 1099-NEC usually arrives in January for the prior calendar year. You generally cannot add “remaining quarters” or a new Form W-4 to that closed year. Pay any balance due with the return (or as allowed), then raise current-year estimates or W-2 withholding so this year does not repeat the shortfall (Side hustle quarterly taxes).
- File on time with software or a preparer (Filing taxes for beginners).
Worked example
Blake receives three 1099-NECs: $8,000, $3,200, and $1,100 ($12,300 on forms). Blake also received $450 from a tiny client with no 1099. Gross receipts = $12,750. Documented expenses = $2,100. Approximate Schedule C profit = $10,650. Blake does not enter $12,750 as a single “tax due” line; software computes income tax + SE tax on profit.
Common mix-ups
- Treating NEC as “already taxed” (Box 1 is not W-2 withholding; only claim tax if Box 4 shows backup withholding).
- Ignoring income below the payer’s form-issuance threshold.
- Confusing 1099-NEC with 1099-K (payment apps/platforms) or 1099-MISC (other categories). Read the form title.
- Assuming an LLC on the invoice removes Schedule C without a tax election.
