Own-occupation and any-occupation are claim definitions on disability policies. They decide whether you are “disabled” enough to collect benefits. The same injury can pay under one wording and fail under the other. This guide is the definition comparison. Product overview: Disability insurance basics. Amount sizing: How much disability coverage you need.
Side-by-side definitions
| Definition | You generally qualify when… | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Own-occupation (true / specialty) | You cannot perform the material duties of your occupation (sometimes your specialty) | Many individual LTD policies; some professional riders |
| Any-occupation | You cannot perform any occupation you are reasonably fitted for by education, training, or experience | Common after 24 months on group LTD; some policies from day one |
| Hybrid / “own then any” | Own-occupation for a set window (often 24 months), then any-occupation | Very common on employer group LTD certificates |
“Modified own-occupation” variants may still pay if you cannot do your job and you are not working elsewhere. Read the exact sentence; marketing labels vary by carrier (Guardian, The Standard, Unum, Principal, MassMutual, and others).
Worked sketch: nurse, back injury, month 30
Jordan is an OR nurse earning $7,200/month take-home. A back injury ends OR shifts. At month 6, under own-occupation, Jordan may still qualify because OR nursing duties are not possible. At month 30, the group certificate switches to any-occupation. If Jordan could do telephone triage or clinic charting that fits training and pays a living wage under the policy’s earnings test, the claim may end even though OR work never returns.
| Clock | Definition in force | Likely question the adjuster asks |
|---|---|---|
| Months 1–24 | Own-occupation | Can Jordan do material OR nursing duties? |
| After month 24 | Any-occupation | Can Jordan do other fitted work? |
Job-related injuries may start in workers’ compensation instead of (or beside) LTD.
What to pull from the certificate
- Find the definition of disability section (not only the brochure %).
- Note any own-occupation period in months and the switch date to any-occupation.
- Check residual / partial disability rules if you return part-time.
- Compare individual riders that keep own-occupation longer vs relying on group wording: Employer disability vs individual.
- Confirm short-term coverage uses its own definition: Short-term disability.
Why the wording changes the dollar outcome
A higher replacement % with a strict any-occupation definition can pay less often than a slightly lower % with true own-occupation. Price quotes without the definition are incomplete. Specialty own-occupation matters most when your income depends on a narrow skill set (surgery, commercial flying, certain trades).
