Sewer backup (often sold as water backup or sump overflow) is an endorsement that pays when wastewater or drain water backs into the house through sewers, drains, or a sump. Many standard homeowners forms exclude that peril, or cap it near zero, even when a burst supply line upstairs would be covered. Buy it when a basement, lower level, or finished living space sits near municipal lines, a septic system, or a sump you rely on.
Claim handling after water hits: Handle a water damage claim. Flood from rising surface water is a different product: Flood vs homeowners.
How is sewer backup different from flood and sudden pipe burst?
| Peril | Typical HO treatment | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Burst supply line (sudden) | Often covered | Base HO + deductible plan |
| Sewer / drain / sump backup | Often excluded without endorsement | Water backup endorsement |
| River, storm surge, surface flood | Excluded on HO | Flood policy |
Do not assume “I have homeowners, so backups are covered.” Ask for the endorsement name and dollar limit on the quote sheet: Quotes apples to apples.
When is the endorsement a fit?
- Finished basement with flooring, drywall, and furniture you cannot fund from cash.
- Older municipal lines or repeated neighborhood backups (ask neighbors / city notices).
- Sump pump is the only thing keeping groundwater out of a lower level.
- Rental lower level you own: buy backup coverage on the landlord / dwelling form for building and landlord-owned property. Tenant belongings need backup coverage on the tenant’s renters policy, not on your owner endorsement.
Skip or keep a low limit only if the exposed space is empty concrete and you can fund cleanup from emergency cash.
Worked example
Alex’s HO-3 has $0 water backup. A city main backup pushes sewage into a finished basement. Mitigation + flooring + drywall quote lands at $18,400. Without the endorsement, Alex pays nearly all of it (subject to any tiny residual coverage). Alex adds a $25,000 water-backup endorsement at renewal for about $75/year (illustrative). Next incident at $12,000 damage sits inside the limit after the endorsement’s own deductible rules. Alex still runs claim-vs-cash math on smaller events: Claim vs out of pocket. Contents list: Inventory for a claim.
Checklist
- Ask: “Is sewer/drain/sump backup covered on my form today, and for how much?”
- Price $5,000 / $10,000 / $25,000 limits against basement rebuild estimates.
- Confirm whether sump overflow is included in the same endorsement.
- Keep flood insurance as a separate yes/no; backup is not flood.
- Photograph the sump and lower-level finishes at bind time; fold them into your home inventory.
Educational only. Not a quote. Backup endorsements, limits, and deductibles vary by carrier and state; verify on your declarations and with a licensed agent.
