Gym contracts often bury annual fees, cancellation fees, and 30–60 day notice rules. This guide is the cancel path: notice method, fee math, and card-stop timing. State and contract notice rules vary. Confirm your club’s cancellation clause and your state’s health-club or consumer rules before you rely on email alone.
What fees usually show up
| Fee type | Typical range | How it sneaks in |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly dues | $10–$60+ | Autopay on card or ACH |
| Annual / “maintenance” | $30–$80 once a year | Billed even in cancel month if notice is late |
| Cancel / early exit | $0–$150 or remaining months | Fixed-term contracts |
| Freeze / hold | $5–$15/month | Sold as pause; still a charge |
If the club used negative option renewals (the membership renews unless you cancel), missing disclosure or a clear consent step is a separate problem. Pair this with Spotting negative-option billing. Cutting other apps is a different task (Cut subscriptions carefully).
Cancel sequence that usually works
- Pull the signed agreement (email PDF, app “contracts,” or front-desk copy). Highlight notice period, address, and allowed methods (certified mail, in-club form, online portal).
- Calculate the last paid-through date. If dues draft on the 1st and you need 30 days’ notice, count 30 full days backward from that draft (and add mail time if the clock starts on receipt, not postmark). A calendar month can be shorter than 30 days.
- Send notice by a method the contract lists, and any method your state requires. Many clubs still demand written notice to a listed address; some states (for example New York health-club rules) require multiple cancel methods. Keep a dated copy or USPS tracking.
- Ask for a written confirmation with an effective cancel date and “$0 further dues.”
- Watch one more billing cycle. If a draft posts after the effective date, dispute with the issuer (Card charge dispute) and send the club the confirmation again.
- Do not only “block the card.” Blocking without contract notice can trigger collections or cancel fees on some fixed terms.
Worked example: $44.99 dues (annual fee is separate)
Sam pays $44.99/month on the 5th. A separate $49 annual fee posts each March 1 only if the membership is still active on that bill date. Contract requires 30 days’ written notice by mail; the club starts the clock on receipt.
| Date | Action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 3 | Sam mails cancel letter (tracking) | In transit |
| Jan 6 | Club receives letter | 30-day clock starts |
| Feb 5 | 30 days from receipt elapsed | Cancel effective before the Feb 5 draft |
| Feb 5 | No dues draft | Success; March annual never posts because membership ended in February |
| If Sam waited until Jan 20 (received Jan 23) | Notice too late for Feb 5 draft | February dues $44.99 still owed; March annual still avoided if cancel is effective before March 1 |
Cost of that late notice: $44.99 (February dues only on these facts). Sam puts the freed $44.99 into a cash-flow system the same payday.
State notice rules vary
Some states set health-club cancel rights, cooling-off periods after signup, or required notice methods. Others leave it mostly to the contract. Do not assume a phone call or app chat is enough, and do not assume the contract can block a cancel method your state requires. Read your agreement, check your state attorney general or consumer site for health-club rules, and use both the contract method and any legally required method.
Checklist
- Find cancel clause, notice days, and mailing address.
- Send required written notice early; keep proof.
- Get written effective date; calendar the next draft date.
- Confirm annual fee will not post after cancel.
- Only after confirmation, remove the card from the club app.
- Reassign the monthly amount in your budget so lifestyle creep does not refill the line (Lifestyle creep).
