Furniture desks at Ashley, Rooms To Go, Mattress Firm, IKEA partners, and similar retailers often pitch “0%” or “no interest if paid in full” through Synchrony, Wells Fargo Retail Services, Bread, or Alliance Data–style store cards. The banner APR is rarely the whole story. You need the go-to APR after the promo, whether interest is waived or deferred, and whether a cash discount disappears when you finance. APR labels you will see
| Label | Plain meaning | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Promo / intro APR | Rate during a stated window (sometimes true 0%) | Is interest waived if paid in full, or deferred (accrues, then dumps)? |
| Go-to / purchase APR | Rate after promo or if you miss the payoff rule | Exact % and whether it applies to the original purchase amount |
| Penalty APR | Rate after late payments on some cards | Whether one late payment ends the promo |
| Cash advance APR | Rarely relevant for furniture—but confirm nothing is coded that way | N/A for most store plans |
True 0% installment loans (fixed payments, interest never accrues if current) are different from deferred-interest revolving plans. Store vs bank framing: Store credit cards vs bank cards.
Deferred interest vs true 0%
Many sofa desks brand deferred interest as “same as cash.” Miss-window walkthrough: Same as cash financing.
Under many furniture promos, interest accrues in the background from day one. If any qualifying balance remains when the promo ends—even $20—the accrued interest can post as a lump sum. That is the residual-balance trap.
A true 0% plan charges no interest for on-time payments during the window; missing the payoff may start interest going forward without rewriting history—read the contract, do not assume.
Worked example: $2,200 sofa set
| Path | Out-the-door | Financing | Outcome if perfect | Outcome if $150 left at month 12 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cash / debit | $2,200 (after $100 cash discount) | None | Pay $2,200 | N/A |
| Store deferred-interest “12 months same as cash” | $2,300 (finance price; cash discount lost) | Synchrony-style plan, go-to APR 29.99% | Pay $2,300 if cleared on time | Accrued interest on ~$2,300 for 12 months can add hundreds in one posting |
| Credit-union personal loan | $2,200 cash price | 11% APR, 24 months | Higher total than cash, but no deferred dump | Predictable amortization |
Maya soft-prequalifies at her credit union (hard vs soft checks), keeps the cash discount, and skips the store card. Paths that avoid the desk pitch: Financing furniture without store cards. Lease-to-own weekly math is a different trap—Furniture lease-to-own vs loan.
Checklist before you sign
- Write cash price (tax + delivery) vs financed price side by side.
- Circle promo end date and whether interest is deferred or waived.
- Note go-to APR and whether payments auto-draft the full payoff path.
- Ask if the application is soft or hard.
- Decline stain-protection and extended-warranty upsells until the furniture math stands alone (service contracts).
- Confirm return rules when the order is financed (Returns when financed).
- If the plan only works on a perfect streak, buy a smaller set or wait.
Red flags at the register
- Staff cannot say whether leftover balance triggers retroactive interest
- “Just a quick check” with no soft/hard answer
- Financing required to unlock a price that was advertised as the sale price
- Same-day pressure to add a mattress protector into the financed amount
Checklist
- Measure rooms and confirm delivery before any credit application.
- Soft-prequalify elsewhere first when possible.
- Prefer true amortization or cash over deferred interest when unsure.
- Calendar the promo end date with a 30-day buffer.
- Screenshot disclosures and keep the credit agreement PDF.
- Re-check the balance 60 days before promo end—not the week of.
