Mattress and furniture financing: APR vs “same as cash”

APR vs “same as cash” on mattress and furniture deals: deferred interest, cash discounts, and how to compare store plans before you sign.

Mattress Firm, Sleep Number, local bedding shops, Ashley, Rooms To Go, and similar floors often pitch “12 / 24 / 36 months same as cash” or “0%” through Synchrony, Wells Fargo Retail Services, Bread, Affirm, or a store card. The banner is rarely the full cost. You need whether interest is waived or deferred, the go-to APR, and whether financing kills a cash discount.

Same-as-cash vs stated APR

Offer stylePlain meaningMain risk
Deferred-interest “same as cash”Interest accrues in the background; waived only if paid in full by the deadlineAny leftover balance can trigger a lump-sum of accrued interest
True 0% installmentNo interest accrues while you stay current for the promo termLate payment may end the promo going forward—read the contract
Everyday store APRInterest from day one (often mid-20%s+)Expensive if you carry a balance
BNPL (Affirm/Klarna-style)Fixed installments; some 0%, some interest-bearingLate fees; possible hard pull; stacking plans

Store card vs bank card framing: Store credit cards vs bank cards. BNPL vs a general card: BNPL vs credit card.

Worked example: $1,800 mattress

Soft-prequalify where possible before a hard pull at the desk (Hard vs soft credit checks). Paths that skip the mattress desk card: Financing furniture without store cards.

Questions at the register

  1. Is interest deferred or truly waived during the promo?
  2. What is the go-to APR if any balance remains on day one after the promo?
  3. Does financing cancel the cash or “paid-in-full” discount?
  4. Soft prequalification or hard inquiry to open the plan?
  5. Are delivery, removal, and protection-plan fees included in the financed amount?

Extended protection pitches are separate products—see Service contracts and extended warranties. Lease-to-own weekly pricing is a different trap: Furniture lease-to-own vs loan.

Checklist

  1. Get the cash price in writing before hearing the finance pitch.
  2. Calculate total cost if you miss the promo payoff by even a little.
  3. Compare a credit-union or bank installment quote with a soft pull when available.
  4. Autopay more than the “same as cash” minimum so you are not $40 short on the deadline.
  5. Save the contract PDF; screenshot the deferred-interest disclosure.
  6. Skip add-on warranties you can self-fund with a sinking fund.
