Legitimate property managers (large regionals, national brands, and licensed local brokers) do not demand Apple gift cards or Friends & Family P2P to “hold” a unit you have never toured.
Red flags

- Refusal to meet at the property or to use a licensed showing agent.

Worked example: the overseas landlord deposit
Sam finds a two-bedroom listed at $1,450 in a market where similar units rent near $2,100. “Ms. Lee” emails that she relocated for work, will FedEx keys after Sam Zelles $2,900 (deposit + first month) to a personal name. Sam pays. Tracking for the “keys” is fake. The real owner, reached through the county assessor site, has never heard of Ms. Lee. Sam’s credit union cannot recall the Zelle send.
