Gumtree chats that insist on Apple Gift Card, Google Play, Steam, Amazon, Argos, or Vanilla Visa prepaid codes for a sofa, phone, bike, or “courier hold” are almost never legitimate. Real local buyers and sellers use cash at a public meetup or Gumtree’s supported payment tools where available—not gift-card PINs typed into chat. Once you read codes off-site, the value is usually gone.

How Gumtree gift-card scripts work
| Script | Who is targeted | How you lose |
|---|---|---|
| Distant buyer “pays” with gift cards for a local item, then asks you to “unlock” shipping | Seller | You buy more cards or refund “extra”; original codes were fake/stolen |
| Seller demands Apple / Google Play / Steam codes before meetup or ship | Buyer | Item never ships; PINs are cash for the scammer |
| Fake “Gumtree Support” chat demands cards to “verify” the sale or release a hold | Either side | Phishing plus irreversible payment |
| Overpayment cousin: buyer “overpays,” then asks you to buy cards for the shipper | Seller | Same overpayment trap with a gift-card extract (Gumtree overpayment scams) |
| Too-good phone or game console held only with a gift-card deposit | Buyer | Deposit vanishes; listing was a clone profile |
Gumtree’s Help pages stress public meetups and caution against off-platform payment tricks. Treat urgency + gift cards + secrecy as a hard stop—same rule the FTC (and Action Fraud / ACCC-style guidance abroad) pushes for any gift-card “bill.” Kijiji gift-card twins: Fake Kijiji gift card scams.
Why Gumtree gift cards are the tell
- PINs move like cash and are hard to reverse once redeemed.
- Screenshots of “codes sent” are easy to fake in chat.
- Platform buyer/seller protection usually does not cover off-app gift-card payments.
- Stolen or empty codes can also create account trouble if you try to redeem them yourself.
Irreversible P2P cousins (Zelle, Cash App, Venmo Friends, bank transfer): Zelle and P2P payment scams.
Worked example: the $320 gaming laptop
Sam lists a used gaming laptop for $320 on Gumtree. “Taylor” messages from a new account: traveling for work, will “pay with Google Play cards so PayPal fees don’t eat the deal,” and needs Sam to confirm four $80 codes in chat before a courier “picks up tonight.” Taylor also offers a £20 / $25 “tip” if Sam buys one more card for the driver.
Sam refuses any gift-card payment, offers cash at a busy supermarket entrance, and reports the profile through Gumtree Help. Taylor blocks Sam. If Sam had read the PINs, those Google Play codes would have been drained within minutes at a rate no bank chargeback at Barclays, Bank of America, or Chase can unwind. A healthier sale the next day uses cash with the serial number checked in person.
Safer Gumtree habits (gift-card edition)
- Never accept or send Apple, Google Play, Steam, or prepaid PINs for Gumtree goods.
- Prefer local cash or Gumtree’s supported checkout / shipping when the listing supports it—confirm current options on official Help for your country.
- Ignore “Gumtree Support” chats that demand cards to release a hold or dispute.
- Refuse overpayment stories that end with buying cards for a shipper or inspector.
- Sellers: new profiles + gift-card-only + same-day shipping pressure = walk away.
- Buyers: if the price is far below comps and payment must be gift cards, skip the deal.
If you already shared PINs
- Stop buying more cards; keep receipts and packaging.
- Contact the gift-card issuer fraud line (Apple, Google, Steam/Valve, retailer) the same day and ask whether unused value can be frozen.
- Report the profile and listing inside Gumtree; screenshot chat and payment asks.
- File ReportFraud.ftc.gov (U.S.), Action Fraud (UK), or your national fraud portal; get a local police report if you need a case number.
- Reject “recovery” helpers who charge a second fee or more gift cards.
- If you also shared ID images or account numbers, monitor accounts and consider freezes at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion where those freezes apply.
Checklist
- Memorize: no legitimate Gumtree sale requires gift-card PINs.
- Local deal, local payment; gift cards are for optional gifting, not laptops or phones.
- Treat payment screenshots and “codes already sent” claims as marketing, not cleared funds.
- Use on-platform tools when you must ship; otherwise skip gift-card strangers.
- Document chat; report clear scams even when you walked away.
- Teach household members the same rule for Gumtree, Kijiji, and Marketplace.
