If someone demands you pay taxes, bail, utilities, a debt, a “refund correction,” or a grandchild’s emergency with Google Play, Apple Gift Card, Steam, Target, Walmart, or Vanilla Visa prepaid codes, treat it as fraud. Real IRS, SSA, Medicare, courts, banks, and utilities do not collect that way. Gift-card rails are popular with criminals because PINs move like cash and are hard to reverse.

Worked example: the “grandson in jail” call
Morgan gets a panicked call: a grandson was arrested out of state; a “court clerk” needs $2,400 in Apple Gift Cards within an hour and forbids calling the parents. Caller ID looks local. Morgan buys cards at a pharmacy, reads PINs, and the line goes dead.
Those funds are gone once PINs are shared. Better path: hang up, call the grandson or parents on a number already in the phone, and contact local non-emergency police if needed. Never send secrecy-based payments. Similar pressure on cash apps: Zelle and P2P payment scams.
Red flags (any one is enough to stop)
- Payment method restricted to gift cards, crypto ATMs, or wire only
- Urgency + secrecy (“don’t tell your bank / spouse”)
- Caller phoned you first claiming to be IRS, Apple, Amazon, or a utility
- Request to photograph card packs or read PINs aloud
- Threats of arrest, deportation, or warrant for not paying immediately
- “Refund” that requires you to buy cards to “clear an overpayment”

If you already shared PINs
- Stop buying more cards; keep receipts and card packaging.
- Contact the gift-card company fraud line (Apple, Google, retailer) immediately—ask whether unused value can be frozen.
- Report to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and your local police; file with the Immigrant/elder fraud resources if relevant.
- If bank or card credentials were also shared, call the issuer’s number on the card, request a freeze, and consider bureau freezes (Credit freezes and fraud alerts).
- Tell the store where you bought the cards—some can flag remaining inventory patterns.
Recovery is uncertain; speed matters more than embarrassment.
Checklist
- Memorize the rule: no legitimate creditor demands gift-card PINs.
- Hang up on urgency + secrecy scripts; call back on a published number.
- Do not read PINs to anyone who contacted you first.
- Keep gift cards for optional gifting—not for bills or “fines.”
- Teach household members the same rule, especially older relatives.
- Report attempts even when you did not pay—helps pattern tracking.
