Fake OfferUp gift-card payment scams

Fake OfferUp gift-card payment scams: buyers and sellers who demand Apple, Google Play, Steam, or prepaid codes, red flags, and what to do if you already shared PINs.

OfferUp deals that insist on Apple Gift Card, Google Play, Steam, Target, Walmart, or Vanilla Visa prepaid codes are almost never legitimate. Real local buyers and sellers use cash at a public meetup, OfferUp’s in-app payment when shipping is supported, or other reversible methods—not gift-card PINs typed into chat. Once you read codes off-app, the value is usually gone.

How OfferUp gift-card scripts work

ScriptWho is targetedHow you lose
Distant buyer “pays” with gift cards for a local item, then asks you to “unlock” shippingSellerYou buy more cards or refund “extra”; original codes were fake/stolen
Seller demands Apple / Google Play / Steam codes before meetup or shipBuyerItem never ships; PINs are cash for the scammer
Fake “OfferUp Support” chat demands cards to “verify” the sale or release a holdEither sidePhishing plus irreversible payment
Overpayment cousin: buyer “overpays,” then asks you to buy cards for the shipperSellerSame overpayment trap with a gift-card extract
Too-good phone or game console held only with a gift-card depositBuyerDeposit vanishes; listing was a clone profile

OfferUp’s safety guidance stresses public meetups and in-app tools when you ship. Treat urgency + gift cards + secrecy as a hard stop—same rule the FTC pushes for any gift-card “bill.” Shipping-label fee cousins: Fake OfferUp shipping scams.

Why OfferUp gift cards are the tell

Gift-card rails are popular on OfferUp because:

  1. PINs move like cash and are hard to reverse once redeemed.
  2. Screenshots of “codes sent” are easy to fake in chat.
  3. Platform buyer/seller protection usually does not cover off-app gift-card payments.
  4. Stolen or empty codes can also create account trouble if you try to redeem them yourself.

Irreversible P2P cousins (Zelle, Cash App, Venmo Friends): Zelle and P2P payment scams.

Worked example: the $350 e-bike

Sam lists an entry-level e-bike for $350 on OfferUp. “Taylor” messages from a new account: traveling for work, will “pay with Google Play cards so PayPal fees don’t eat the deal,” and needs Sam to confirm five $70 codes in chat before a courier “picks up tonight.” Taylor also offers a $30 “tip” if Sam buys one more card for the driver.

Sam refuses any gift-card payment, offers cash at a police-station lot, and reports the profile. Taylor blocks Sam. If Sam had read the PINs, those Google Play codes would have been drained within minutes at a rate no bank chargeback can unwind. A healthier sale the next day uses cash at a busy Target entrance with the serial number checked in person.

Safer OfferUp habits (gift-card edition)

  1. Never accept or send Apple, Google Play, Steam, or prepaid PINs for OfferUp goods.
  2. Prefer local cash or OfferUp in-app checkout / shipping when the listing supports it.
  3. Ignore “OfferUp Support” chats that demand cards to release a hold or dispute.
  4. Refuse overpayment stories that end with buying cards for a shipper or inspector.
  5. Sellers: new profiles + gift-card-only + same-day shipping pressure = walk away.
  6. Buyers: if the price is far below comps and payment must be gift cards, skip the deal.

If you already shared PINs

  1. Stop buying more cards; keep receipts and packaging.
  2. Contact the gift-card issuer fraud line (Apple, Google, Steam/Valve, retailer) the same day and ask whether unused value can be frozen.
  3. Report the profile and listing inside OfferUp; screenshot chat and payment asks.
  4. File ReportFraud.ftc.gov and a local police report if you need a case number for the bank or issuer.
  5. Reject “recovery” helpers who charge a second fee or more gift cards.
  6. If you also shared ID images or account numbers, monitor accounts and consider freezes at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Checklist

  1. Memorize: no legitimate OfferUp sale requires gift-card PINs.
  2. Local deal, local payment; gift cards are for optional gifting, not bikes or phones.
  3. Treat payment screenshots and “codes already sent” claims as marketing, not cleared funds.
  4. Use in-app checkout when you must ship; otherwise skip gift-card strangers.
  5. Document chat; report clear scams even when you walked away.
  6. Teach household members the same rule for OfferUp, Marketplace, and Buy/Sell Groups.
