A polished Depop buyer (or a lookalike “Depop Protect” email) offers above asking price if you ship with their prepaid label, accept Zelle or Venmo outside the app, refund an “overpayment,” or move the deal to Instagram or WhatsApp. Real offers, checkout, and seller tools live inside the Depop app or depop.com. Same closet-resale pattern as Fake Poshmark offer scams and Fake Etsy purchase protection scams.
Gift-card drains: Gift cards and prepaid debit risks. Broader fraud map: Credit and debt scams.
Scripts to expect
| Script | Hook | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Fake high offer + off-app pay | “I’ll PayPal/Zelle $90 extra so we skip Depop fees” | Irreversible P2P; item ships, money never sticks (Zelle and P2P scams) |
| Overpayment / “assistant” refund | Buyer “tips extra” or a fake PayPal email shows too much; wants gift-card or wire change | You refund before the fake payment clears (eBay overpayment cousins) |
| Buyer-provided shipping label | “Use my USPS/UPS PDF. I’m a stylist buying for a client.” | Label swap / address fraud; you lose the item and may owe carrier fees |
| Instagram / WhatsApp pivot | “Depop chat is glitchy. DM me @… to finish” | Leaves platform records; second payment is off-app |
| Fake Depop Protect / support portal | “Case #… verify with Apple gift cards to release payout” | PIN drain; credentials on a lookalike site |
Depop Support does not collect gift-card PINs, crypto, or remote-access apps to “finish” a sale or Protect case.
Red flags
- Links that are not depop.com (lookalike domains, URL shorteners, “secure-depop-protect” hosts).
- Pressure to leave Depop chat for Instagram DMs, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, or email attachments before you accept an in-app offer.
- Payment methods Depop checkout does not use for that order: gift cards, wire, Western Union, MoneyGram, Friends & Family P2P.
- A shipping label PDF or QR from the buyer instead of the label Depop generates after an official sale.
- Requests for your Depop password, 2FA codes, or screen-sharing to “approve a payout.”
- A PayPal or Venmo “payment received” screenshot that is not a completed in-app Depop sale.
Worked example: the overpay + Instagram pivot
Riley lists vintage Levi’s for $55 on Depop. A “buyer” comments in-app, then DMs on Instagram offering $95 if Riley ships today with an attached prepaid USPS label and accepts $95 on Zelle so both “skip fees.” A follow-up Gmail shows a fake PayPal receipt for $145 and asks Riley to “refund the extra $50” in Apple gift cards because the buyer’s “assistant overpaid.”
Riley ships to the label address. The Zelle name does not match; the payment is canceled or never sent. The jeans are gone. The gift-card PINs are drained. A later text demands $40 more to “unlock Depop Protect shipping insurance.”
Safer path: accept only in-app offers, print the label Depop provides after checkout, and never take a second payment off-platform. Marketplace cousins that use the same overpayment scripts: Fake OfferUp meetup scams.
Safer Depop payment habits
- Sell and ship only through Depop checkout when you want platform protections.
- Open help or Protect tools from the official app or a bookmark, not from cold email or Instagram.
- Ignore gift-card, wire, and Friends & Family “offer unlock” fees.
- Treat buyer-supplied labels and off-app Zelle/Venmo/Cash App as walk-away signals.
- If a buyer insists they are a personal shopper who “always pays outside Depop,” decline.
Named brands that appear in these scripts include Depop, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, Apple Gift Card, Google Play, Instagram, USPS, UPS, FedEx, Target / Walmart card aisles, and major issuers (Chase, Capital One, Amex) on any original card charge. That original charge is not a reason to trust a second off-app payment.
If you already paid, shipped, or shared codes
- Contact your bank or card issuer the same day; ask about recalls, disputes, and fraud claims on gift-card purchases (Disputing a credit card charge).
- Preserve Depop message exports, Instagram DMs, email headers, label PDFs, and tracking numbers.
- Change your Depop password; enable 2FA; report the user in-app.
- File ReportFraud.ftc.gov; do not pay a “recovery specialist” who cold-contacts you.
Checklist
- Accept offers and print labels only inside official Depop tools.
- Never unlock “Depop Protect” or payouts with gift cards or crypto.
- Refuse buyer-supplied shipping labels and off-app Zelle/Venmo for strangers.
- Keep payment on Depop checkout when you want platform protections.
- Verify domains; type depop.com yourself.
- Report scams so Depop and the FTC can pattern-match accounts.
