Fake Poshmark offer, shipping-label, and off-app payment scams

Fake Poshmark offer, shipping-label, and off-app payment scams: bogus buyer offers, prepaid-label traps, and how real Posh Protect works.

A polished Poshmark message or email says a buyer “just offered” above asking price if you ship with their prepaid label, accept Zelle outside the app, or “release” funds with a gift card. Real offers, checkout, and seller protection tools live inside the Poshmark app or poshmark.com. Same off-platform pattern as Fake Etsy purchase protection scams and Fake OfferUp meetup scams.

Gift-card drains: Gift cards and prepaid debit risks. Broader fraud map: Credit and debt scams.

Scripts to expect

ScriptHookGoal
Fake high offer + off-app pay“I’ll pay $220 via Zelle—skip Posh fees”Irreversible P2P; item ships, money never sticks (Zelle and P2P scams)
Buyer-provided shipping label“Use my UPS/USPS PDF so I cover shipping”Label swap / address fraud; you lose the item and may owe carrier fees
Fake Posh Protect / support portal“Case #… verify with Apple gift cards to release payout”PIN drain; credentials on a lookalike site
Overpayment / “assistant” refundBuyer “tips extra”; wants wire or card change backYou refund before the fake payment clears
Compromised closet DMsReal-looking closet asks you to “relist” and repay on Cash AppHijacked account; second payment never recovers the first

Poshmark Support does not collect gift-card PINs, crypto, or remote-access apps to “finish” a sale or Posh Protect case.

Red flags

  • Links that are not poshmark.com (lookalike domains, URL shorteners, “secure-posh-protect” hosts).
  • Pressure to leave Poshmark chat for WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, or email attachments before you accept an in-app offer.
  • Payment methods Poshmark checkout does not use for that order: gift cards, wire, Western Union, MoneyGram, Friends & Family P2P.
  • A shipping label PDF or QR from the buyer instead of the label Poshmark generates after an official sale.
  • Requests for your Poshmark password, 2FA codes, or screen-sharing to “approve a payout.”

Worked example: the fake label + Zelle offer

Jordan lists a designer handbag for $180 on Poshmark. A “buyer” emails from a Gmail address (not Poshmark chat) offering $250 if Jordan ships today with an attached prepaid USPS label and accepts $250 on Zelle so both “skip fees.” Jordan ships to the label address. The Zelle name does not match; the payment is canceled or never sent. The bag is gone. A follow-up text demands $75 in Apple gift cards to “unlock Posh Protect shipping insurance.”

Safer path: accept only in-app offers, print the label Poshmark provides after checkout, and never take a second payment off-platform. Marketplace cousins that use the same overpayment and meetup scripts: Fake Facebook Marketplace scams.

Safer Poshmark payment habits

  1. Sell and ship only through Poshmark checkout when you want platform protections.
  2. Open help or Posh Protect tools from the official app or a bookmark—not from cold email.
  3. Ignore gift-card, wire, and Friends & Family “offer unlock” fees.
  4. Treat buyer-supplied labels and off-app Zelle/Venmo/Cash App as walk-away signals.
  5. For local closet clear-outs outside Poshmark, use the same public-meetup cash rules as OfferUp/Marketplace.

Named brands that appear in these scripts include Poshmark, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, Apple Gift Card, Google Play, USPS, UPS, FedEx, Target / Walmart card aisles, and major issuers (Chase, Capital One, Amex) on any original card charge—not a reason to trust a second off-app payment.

If you already paid, shipped, or shared codes

  1. Contact your bank or card issuer the same day; ask about recalls, disputes, and fraud claims on gift-card purchases.
  2. Preserve Poshmark message exports, email headers, label PDFs, and tracking numbers.
  3. Change your Poshmark password; enable 2FA; report the user in-app.
  4. File ReportFraud.ftc.gov; do not pay a “recovery specialist” who cold-contacts you.

Checklist

  1. Accept offers and print labels only inside official Poshmark tools.
  2. Never unlock “Posh Protect” or payouts with gift cards or crypto.
  3. Refuse buyer-supplied shipping labels and off-app Zelle/Venmo for strangers.
  4. Keep payment on Poshmark checkout when you want platform protections.
  5. Verify domains; type poshmark.com yourself.
  6. Report scams so Poshmark and the FTC can pattern-match accounts.
