A message that looks like Etsy Purchase Protection or Etsy Support asks you to “release,” “verify,” or “unlock” an order with a gift card, wire, crypto, or an off-site login. A related seller script moves you to WhatsApp or SMS and demands payment outside Etsy’s checkout. Real Buyer Protection and case tools live inside your Etsy account. Same off-platform pattern as Fake Facebook Marketplace scams and Fake OfferUp meetup scams.
Gift-card drains: Gift cards and prepaid debit risks. Broader fraud map: Credit and debt scams.
Scripts to expect
| Script | Hook | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Fake Purchase Protection portal | “Case #… verify payment to release funds” | Credentials or a second payment off Etsy |
| Seller off-app payment | “Etsy fees are high—just Venmo / Zelle / Cash App” | Irreversible P2P; item never ships (Zelle and P2P scams) |
| Overpayment / “assistant” refund | Buyer “overpays”; wants gift-card or wire change | You refund before the fake payment clears (eBay overpayment cousins) |
| Compromised shop message | Real-looking shop asks you to “repay” via Apple / Google Play cards | Card PINs drained; shop may already be hijacked |
| Fake shipping label / customs fee | “Pay $49 duty to release your package” | Extra payment to a stranger, not a carrier |
Etsy Support does not ask for gift-card PINs, crypto wallet deposits, or remote-access apps to “finish” Buyer Protection.
Red flags
- Links that are not etsy.com (lookalike domains, URL shorteners, or “secure-etsy-cases” hosts).
- Pressure to leave the Etsy inbox for WhatsApp, Telegram, or SMS before you open a case in-app.
- Payment methods Etsy checkout does not use for that order: gift cards, wire, Western Union, MoneyGram, Friends & Family P2P.
- “Agent” names that only appear in the suspicious email, not in your Etsy Purchases / Cases UI.
- Requests for your Etsy password, 2FA codes, or screen-sharing to “approve a refund.”
Worked example: the fake protection unlock
Alex buys a handmade desk organizer for $85 on Etsy with a Chase Visa. Two days later an email titled “Etsy Purchase Protection – Action required” says the seller disputed fulfillment and Alex must “confirm” $120 in Apple gift cards so Support can “hold escrow.” The link opens a polished form that is not etsy.com. Alex buys cards at Target, sends PINs, then loses both the $120 and (often) still needs a normal chargeback path on the $85 if the item never arrives.
Safer path: open the order from the official Etsy app or etsy.com bookmark, use Help / Cases only from that session, and never pay a second time off-platform. If the shop pushes Zelle, walk away and report the listing.
Safer Etsy payment habits
- Pay only through Etsy checkout for marketplace orders you want Buyer Protection on.
- Start help cases from Your account → Purchases / Help, not from cold email or seller SMS.
- Ignore gift-card, wire, and Friends & Family “protection” fees.
- Treat seller pressure to leave the app as a warning, not a fee-savings tip.
- For local meetup custom orders, use the same public-meetup rules as Marketplace/OfferUp—cash or on-platform only.
Named brands that appear in these scripts include Etsy, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, Apple Gift Card, Google Play, Target / Walmart card aisles, and major issuers (Chase, Capital One, Amex) on the original charge—not a reason to trust a second off-app payment.
If you already paid or shared codes
- Contact your card issuer or bank the same day; ask about chargebacks and fraud claims on both the Etsy charge and any gift-card purchases.
- Preserve Etsy message exports, email headers, and card receipts.
- Change your Etsy password; enable 2FA; report the shop/user in-app.
- File ReportFraud.ftc.gov; do not pay a “recovery specialist” who cold-contacts you.
Checklist
- Open cases only from the official Etsy account UI.
- Never unlock “Purchase Protection” with gift cards or crypto.
- Keep payment on Etsy checkout when you want platform protections.
- Refuse overpayment refunds and off-app Zelle/Venmo for strangers.
- Verify domains; type etsy.com yourself.
- Report scams so Etsy and the FTC can pattern-match accounts.
