A polished Mercari message or email says a buyer “already paid” if you print their prepaid USPS/UPS label, accept Zelle outside the app, or “release” Mercari Protection with a gift card. Real offers, labels, and seller tools live inside the Mercari app or mercari.com after an official sale. Same off-platform pattern as Fake Poshmark offer scams and Fake Etsy purchase protection scams. Carrier QR postage texts that never mention Mercari are a different script: Fake shipping-label and QR scams.
Gift-card drains: Gift cards and prepaid debit risks. Broader fraud map: Credit and debt scams.
Scripts to expect
| Script | Hook | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer-provided shipping label | “Use my UPS/USPS PDF so I cover shipping” | Label swap / address fraud; you lose the item and may owe carrier fees |
| Fake high offer + off-app pay | “I’ll Zelle $90 extra—skip Mercari fees” | Irreversible P2P; item ships, money never sticks (Zelle and P2P scams) |
| Fake Mercari Protection / support portal | “Case #… verify with Apple gift cards to release payout” | PIN drain; credentials on a lookalike site |
| Overpayment / “assistant” refund | Buyer “tips extra”; wants wire or card change back | You refund before the fake payment clears |
| Compromised closet DMs | Real-looking shop asks you to relist and repay on Cash App | Hijacked account; second payment never recovers the first |
Mercari Support does not collect gift-card PINs, crypto, or remote-access apps to “finish” a sale or Protection case.
Red flags
- Links that are not mercari.com (lookalike domains, URL shorteners, “secure-mercari-protect” hosts).
- Pressure to leave Mercari chat for WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, or email attachments before you accept an in-app offer.
- Payment methods Mercari checkout does not use for that order: gift cards, wire, Western Union, MoneyGram, Friends & Family P2P.
- A shipping label PDF or QR from the buyer instead of the label Mercari generates after an official sale.
- Requests for your Mercari password, 2FA codes, or screen-sharing to “approve a payout.”
Worked example: the fake label + Zelle offer
Priya lists a pair of sneakers for $65 on Mercari. A “buyer” emails from a Gmail address (not Mercari chat) offering $95 if she ships today with an attached prepaid USPS label and accepts $95 on Zelle so both “skip fees.” Priya ships to the label address. The Zelle name does not match; the payment is canceled or never sent. The shoes are gone. A follow-up text demands $50 in Apple gift cards to “unlock Mercari shipping insurance.”
Safer path: accept only in-app offers, print the label Mercari provides after checkout, and never take a second payment off-platform. Marketplace cousins that use the same overpayment scripts: Fake OfferUp meetup scams.
Safer Mercari payment habits
- Sell and ship only through Mercari checkout when you want platform protections.
- Open help or Protection tools from the official app or a bookmark—not from cold email.
- Ignore gift-card, wire, and Friends & Family “offer unlock” fees.
- Treat buyer-supplied labels and off-app Zelle/Venmo/Cash App as walk-away signals.
- For local meetups outside Mercari, use the same public-meetup cash rules as OfferUp/Marketplace.
Named brands that appear in these scripts include Mercari, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, Apple Gift Card, Google Play, USPS, UPS, FedEx, Target / Walmart card aisles, and major issuers (Chase, Capital One, Amex) on any original card charge—not a reason to trust a second off-app payment.
If you already paid, shipped, or shared codes
- Contact your bank or card issuer the same day; ask about recalls, disputes, and fraud claims on gift-card purchases (Disputing a credit card charge).
- Preserve Mercari message exports, email headers, label PDFs, and tracking numbers.
- Change your Mercari password; enable 2FA; report the user in-app.
- File ReportFraud.ftc.gov; do not pay a “recovery specialist” who cold-contacts you.
Checklist
- Accept offers and print labels only inside official Mercari tools.
- Never unlock “Mercari Protection” or payouts with gift cards or crypto.
- Refuse buyer-supplied shipping labels and off-app Zelle/Venmo for strangers.
- Keep payment on Mercari checkout when you want platform protections.
- Verify domains; type mercari.com yourself.
- Report scams so Mercari and the FTC can pattern-match accounts.
